Home / Who We Help / Fintech and Financial Technology
Schell IP helps fintech companies evaluate patent questions around payment infrastructure, authentication, financial software, and distributed computing. We connect the proposed technical contribution with platform launches, partner integrations, financing plans, and the agreements supporting the business.

A payment, lending, or trading concept does not become patent-eligible simply because software performs it. The analysis should address the claimed implementation, including any specific improvement to computing, security, communication, or another technological process.
A useful discussion may examine how transactions are verified, how a system recovers from failure, or how sensitive credentials are handled. We can help organize invention disclosures and discuss whether the technical details support further patent searching and application work.
Fintech products often rely on banking partners, processors, outside developers, open-source libraries, and licensed APIs. Identify each relationship and distinguish the company's own contribution from services it accesses. Contractual access to an API is not the same as owning the underlying invention.
Patent strategy can be coordinated with Whiteford counsel handling corporate, technology contract, privacy, and regulatory questions as appropriate. A patent review does not establish financial-services compliance or permission to offer a regulated product.
Financial concepts and abstract ideas face eligibility limits. A particular claimed technological implementation requires its own analysis; using blockchain or AI does not answer the question by itself.
Patent, trademark, copyright, and trade-secret rights address different aspects of a product and may need a coordinated plan.
Yes. Early discussions can identify invention ownership, disclosure timing, and contract questions before commitments become harder to change.
