Home / Who We Help / Product Development Strategy
Schell IP helps founders and product teams connect development decisions with patent and intellectual property strategy. We bring invention capture, disclosure timing, competitor patent questions, and supplier agreements into the roadmap before important design and launch choices become difficult to change.

At concept stage, identify the problem, proposed technical contribution, and contributors. During prototyping, record what changed, why it changed, and which alternatives remain viable. Before tooling or a public launch, revisit the invention, the third-party patent questions, and the agreements governing production.
The objective is a considered development process. A patentability search asks whether an invention may qualify for protection; a freedom-to-operate review addresses other parties' claims against a proposed implementation. Those inquiries can inform different decisions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
We can discuss invention disclosures, patent searches, application preparation, portfolio priorities, and patent design-around questions. Development, contractor, manufacturing, and licensing agreements may also need review with appropriate counsel so rights and commercial responsibilities match the plan.
Patent counsel can help frame legal and IP decisions alongside engineering work. Product validation, safety testing, regulatory review, sourcing performance, and business viability still need the relevant technical and commercial input. A patent filing does not establish product-market fit or freedom to launch.
A discussion can begin before major disclosures or production commitments. The appropriate work depends on the stage, technical information, and next decision.
No. Review its technical contribution, support, commercial importance, and relationship to existing applications before setting priorities.
Yes. Relevant claims, patentability questions, and ownership constraints can inform an engineering comparison, alongside performance and cost.
