Patent strategy for clean energy technology

Schell IP helps clean energy and renewable energy businesses evaluate patent questions around power generation, grid integration, energy conversion, and efficiency technologies. We connect engineering improvements with demonstration projects, supplier relationships, licensing opportunities, and portfolio priorities.

Look beyond the energy source

An energy project can involve inverter control, turbine components, thermal management, power electronics, installation hardware, or coordination of distributed assets. The patent discussion should identify the particular mechanism that improves operation, not simply the use of renewable energy.

For example, a controller that coordinates variable generation and storage raises different questions from a new mounting structure. We can help organize those contributions into invention disclosures and discuss whether searches or applications should address separate parts of the system.

Use pilot projects to clarify the patent plan

Field tests can reveal operating conditions, integration constraints, and improvements absent from early prototypes. Capture what changed and why. Also identify what utility partners, grant sponsors, equipment suppliers, and customers may receive or disclose during the project.

Portfolio planning should consider the markets where products may be made, installed, or licensed. A patent application is not a global clearance to commercialize. Third-party claims and applicable regulatory or interconnection requirements remain separate questions.

Bring these priorities to the discussion

  • The equipment or control architecture and its technical difference.
  • Test results, operating ranges, and practical alternatives.
  • Grant, research, joint development, and supplier obligations.
  • Demonstration dates, procurement milestones, and intended markets.

Clean energy patent questions

Can a retrofit or efficiency improvement be reviewed?

Yes. Improvements to existing equipment can be evaluated on their own technical merits and the relevant prior art.

Should we patent every improvement found in a pilot?

Not necessarily. Commercial importance, detectability, disclosure, cost, and the development roadmap can inform priorities.

Are batteries and solar hardware covered here?

This page addresses the broader energy business. Dedicated battery, solar, and charging pages explore those product-specific questions.
